Another portable speaker has once again dominated the market. This is a surprise for all audiophiles out there, especially the avid users of JBL devices. Last time, many have enjoyed what JBL offered, the amazing portable speaker which is the JBL Charge. Now, they have made another version of this, the JBL Charge 2. Just like its predecessor, JBL Charge 2 has a lot of perks that you can get!If you do not have such device and have doubts of getting it, then you are in a right place to help you consider this. JBL Charge 2 has impressed us so we guess that you will be too.

To help you get more information about the maker of these portable speakers, here is a quick overview. JBL is a company whose primary products are loudspeakers, premium speakers, and other electronics. Some of JBL’s portable speakers include Micro, Flip, Charge, and now, the Charge 2.

As what we said a while ago, the JBL Charge 2 has many perks. Here’s a review we’ve made to help you know what you can get good (and bad) from the JBL Charge 2. Again, we judged its design and tested its performance and connection capabilities.

JBL Charge 2 – Performance

A portable speaker’s performance is one of the factors to instantly help you decide whether to get it or not. The JBL Charge 2’s performance, as we tested it, is very impressive and thus not disappointing at all.For its size, the JBL Charge 2 plays very loud and at the same time delivers sounds that are very good and clear. This portable speaker is built with two 1.5 inch drivers which makes it produces great audio quality.Compared from other portable Bluetooth speakers, the JBL Charge 2 stands out. It differentiates itself from others for its nice loud sound (without any problems) that could instantly fill a small room – as long as the speaker is not levelled at the highest volumes.

Another thing we have noticed here is the differentiated range that lets you hear the amount of bass, mid-range, and the treble separately (but not compromising the quality, of course). This noticeable differentiated range may be because of the separate passive radiators placed at both ends of the speaker and the other essential parts, like the drivers, placed at the center which is covered by the grill.

The passive radiators, as we’ve described, totally adds another great feature to the JBL Charge 2. This part helps the portable speaker deliver large bass sound. The quality of bass varies on the different materials, though. If played with simple tracks, or played at the modest volume, the bass quality is good. On the other side, if the JBL Charge 2 is played with heavier and much complicated tracks, the bass falls short and distortions become a serious problem. If thought out, the JBL Charge 2 is still something to be worked at, especially for its bass. Yet take note that this is still a compact speaker so bass quality must be given consideration.

Aside from excellent audio quality delivered by the JBL Charge 2, we were also impressed how outstanding its battery is. This portable speaker encloses a 6000mAh battery that makes an estimated 12 hours of playback possible. This unit charges with a Micro-USB also. As expected, this unit doubles a feature where you can charge your devices, such as smartphones and tablets, when you are in need. That is why it’s called “Charge”, to simply plug your iPhone, iPad, or Android devices, into its USB port and charge them. So when your device suddenly losses power, this feature is indeed very helpful for you to use.

JBL Charge 2 – Design

The JBL Charge 2 is still cylindrical in shape, a unit just as a size of a large energy drink can. Even having a shape like this, laying it down horizontally is still possible. Of course, the JBL Charge 2 is easier to position vertically.Although bulky, the design of the JBL Charge 2 seems to be durable and sturdy. So if you may suddenly drop this portable speaker, it could not be easily broken. It may even still be streaming your music clearly! From its previous predecessor, JBL Charge 2 has some minor design changes. The aesthetics are improved. The white LED look is enhanced while the side panels found near the bass are designed with silver. Not just the looks are improved, but also the feel where the body feels to have been shielded or coated with more rubber or silicone, making it easier to grip.

The JBL Charge 2 has a hard plastic grille to cover the speaker. In the speaker’s panel, the built-in controls are found, while the base has the inputs for the Micro-USB (for charging the speaker), auxiliary (for playing with wired devices), and for the USB (for charging devices like the smartphones and tablets). On both sides of the JBL Charge 2 are the passive radiators to allow the speaker to produce the bass.

JBL Charge 2 – Connectivity

The JBL Charge 2 has the capability to connect wirelessly with any devices. This portable speaker belongs to the Bluetooth speaker category. Yes, the JBL Charge 2 streams music from smartphones, tablets, or any other devices supported with Bluetooth. As we have tested our devices with the JBL Charge 2, we didn’t find any connection or pairing problems. Also, re-pairing our devices was easy and automatic especially when the portable speaker is recently turned on. Take note that one of the buttons is dedicated for Bluetooth to enable easier pairing. We also didn’t find any problems with disconnections or dropouts as long as we have stayed at a range of 10 meter or 33 feet.

Another feature we found in terms of its connectivity is the ability of the JBL Charge 2 allows pairing of up to three devices at once. They called this the Social Mode. With this, three devices can have alternate control over the portable speaker, thus letting each other to play tracks alternatively. By the way, this feature is similar to Sol Republic’s Deck speaker.

Lastly, making us more impressed is JBL Charge 2’s speakerphone capability. With the portable speaker, you can now easily respond to calls without even turning your attention to your device. As we tried it, we found that the quality is very decent, with lesser echoes and noise.
